Hi, my friends! I thought today I'd share something a little different—a lifestyle post about my morning routine.
I know BellaArt Creates is primarily a crafty site, but I think a little lifestyle content belongs here too. After all, everything I create happens within the rhythms of everyday life, and how I start my morning has a lot to do with how the rest of my day goes.
Before I get into it, my morning routine may look very different from yours. There's only hubby and me at home, and we don't have responsibilities like children or grandchildren to care for. We're also retired, although we supplement our fixed income by working from home. That gives us a lot of flexibility in how we structure our days.
The first thing I normally do when I wake up is say a short prayer thanking The Lord for waking both hubby and me up for another day. We don't take being on this side of the soil for granted.
A few years ago, my little brother passed away in his sleep. He was five years younger than me and my last living relative, and losing him affected me deeply. I miss him terribly. That experience made waking up to another day something I don't want to take for granted.
After my short prayer, I like to make the bed. I've watched some of those “get up with me in the morning” videos where people talk about making their beds first thing, and I completely understand why. For me, it's a little ritual that gets me moving and tells my brain, Okay, the day has started.
Then it's on to all those normal getting-ready things—brushing my teeth, washing up, combing and styling my hair, doing my skincare routine and getting dressed.
At age 63+, I'm not as concerned about the looks department as I once was, especially when it comes to makeup. I've come to have peace with how I look at this age, and that's a pretty comfortable place to be.
Choosing what to wear is another part of my morning. Sometimes I stand there with absolutely no idea what I want to put on—not because I don't have enough clothes, but because I don't always know what I feel like wearing that particular morning. So I'll simply pray and ask God to show me what to wear. He always does, and I get dressed.
Even when I'm staying home, I like putting on street clothes. If I stay in pajamas, I feel like I'm still in bed!
I've actually done this since I became self-employed back in 1999. Getting dressed for the day puts me into a different frame of mind. I'm also ready if I need to run an errand, go to the mailbox or take care of something unexpected. It simply makes me feel productive and prepared for the day ahead.
Now, you won't find a cup of coffee anywhere in my morning routine because I'm not a coffee drinker. I know, I know! 😂 But I love drinking water in the morning. It soothes my throat and helps me feel revived.
I don't usually eat breakfast either, even though I love breakfast food! Every now and then I might have a slice of toast, but most mornings I'm perfectly happy with my water.
After that, I like to spend some quiet time with The Lord. I'll usually go downstairs, sit in my reading chair, pray, read some Scripture and a devotion, and sometimes write my thoughts in my journal.
Depending on what's happening that day, I don't always get that quiet time exactly the way I'd like. On those mornings, I'll say a silent prayer and ask God to grant us a good day ahead. My routine isn't about doing everything perfectly every single morning.
From there, it's upstairs to what I call our command center in the office.
We have a whiteboard where I write down what's going on for the day. It might include incoming orders, our cleaning schedule, household or work-related tasks, a bill that needs to be paid or anything else we need to remember. I also check my planner.
Throughout the day, as hubby and I complete things, we check them off at the command center. And sometimes things don't get checked off at all! They simply roll over to the next day because we couldn't get to them.
That's fine with us. We don't operate on a militant schedule.
One reason I like having a regular morning routine is that it helps the day run more smoothly while still leaving room for surprises. Sometimes something comes up and whatever we thought we were going to do that day has to change.
Not long ago, for example, we'd planned out our day when we discovered that the heavy rain from the night before had gotten inside our outdoor storage case. That's where we keep paints, pesticides and other products that aren't safe for us to store inside the house.
Well, there went the schedule!
Hubby had to drain the water, clean out the case and deal with all the cans inside. The whole thing took roughly two hours.
And don't worry—we ordered a better storage case afterward! This one has two locks, is waterproof, and so far it has been working great.
That's life. You can have a perfectly nice little plan written on the whiteboard, and then something happens that wasn't invited to the meeting. 😂
For me, having a regular morning routine helps prepare me for whatever the rest of the day brings. It gives me the energy to tackle what's on my to-do list and helps keep my mind sharp. Most importantly, giving my day to God and allowing Him to guide me helps ground my thoughts before I get caught up in everything else.
Now that I'm newly retired, my routine has changed—but only slightly. The biggest difference is the pace.
Instead of starting my mornings by rushing to answer business emails and texts, I can take things much more slowly.
And I like that.
For the rest of my day, I make a point of enjoying what it has to offer me. Some days go exactly as planned. Some don't. But my little morning routine gives me a comfortable place to begin.
Do you have a morning routine? Is there something you do almost every morning without fail? I'd love to hear about it in the comments below.
Thanks for reading!
